Museum Group Tours
The Poe Museum is proud to offer a variety of museum tours and unique programming for adult and team building groups. Please contact us for more information, or fill out a tour request form.
Average tour is one hour. The group rate for tours booked in advance is $5 per person.
Additional Programming Descriptions:
“The Tell-Tale Heart” Mock Trial
After a dramatic reading of “The Tell-Tale Heart,” students divide into groups of defense attorneys and prosecutors to argue for a verdict in a mock courtroom presided over by a student judge. The group jury decides whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. Average program length is 30 minutes; $3 per person
The Red Death Interrogated
After a dramatic reading of “The Masque of the Red Death,” students divide into groups to debate the motives of the protagonist of the story: Is he a hero or a villain? Before the concluding arguments, one student appointed as the Plague Doctor will deliver information about real plagues throughout history. Average program length is 30 minutes; $3 per person
Walking Tours
Really experience Poe's Richmond with a walking tour! Poe called Shockoe home, and our walking tours explore the local sights and history of Richmond's oldest neighborhood. $5 per person, 50 minute walk
Poe's Shockoe Bottom
This tour explores the immediate neighborhood of the museum with stops at sites provoking associations with some of Poe’s greatest stories and poems such as “The Conqueror Worm,” “To Helen,” and “The Premature Burial,” selections of which will be read on tour.
Walk in the Poet's Footsteps
Explore Poe’s life through stops at Richmond landmarks associated with Poe, including the Masonic Lodge, the Craig House, the 17th Street Farmers’ Market and the Henrico County Courthouse.

Enchanted Garden Tour
In 1922 the Poe Museum opened its doors to reveal a beautiful Enchanted Garden in the heart of Richmond’s Historic Shockoe Bottom. Based on
Poe’s poem, “To One in Paradise,” our Enchanted Garden features plants mentioned in Poe’s works, one hundred-year-old boxwoods, as well
as specialty features and our two resident black cats, Edgar and Pluto. Learn about Poe’s Richmond and the art form of the garden on this tour, which lasts an hour and
a half and includes a tour of the museum.
The Poe Museum is a Restoration Garden of the Garden Club of Virginia and a member of the of the Richmond Garden Trail. $8/person, max. 15 guests
